Getting ready
For my trip to Hainan which is a tiny island about the size of Ireland to the South of China and it’s supposed to some kind of a tropical paradise. Time to get my speedos groove on…

Where do mushrooms come from?
Seriously have you ever sat there, like I did today, eating mushrooms at home or in a restaurant or for other, trippier reasons and thought of the amount of people who must have died or gone through some kind of horrific bout of illness just so you can sit there in your high chair with your silver forks and spoons and arrogant thoughts of healthy eating carelessly...
Day ¥
Went to my dad’s old music conservatory today where he grew up. It’s basically a huge music school for all ages where you eat, live and sleep. I’ve been there before seeing as my grandparents have their second apartment there so that when they teach they have a place to chill. But today I actually went around the school itself and explored all the rooms floor by floor. It so...
Day ˚
Today I learnt that there is no drinking age in China.
That’s all I have to say about that.
Day ©
Just watched an interview with Megan Fox about her upcoming movie ‘Jennifer’s Body’ where she kept doing weird things with her mouth until she eventually pulls away from the camera and goes ‘My god I’m sorry I don’t know why I keep burping at interviews’.
Total. Turn. Off. Suddenly she seems to be more Human than Goddess…

Oh how I missed yee sweet holy nectar of bread life…
Day Ω
Today I ate a crab for lunch. It was alive and wriggling about right until my grandma popped it in to be boiled. I felt like I knew it for a short while… It’s meaty legs said ‘tasty!’ but it’s eyes said ‘why?!’

Day 6
Chinese lessons are hard.
We spent 2 hours staring at what can only have been a dozen words with our teacher slowly pronouncing them for us to repeat.
In Chinese, the order of words are completely reversed which makes it very confusing to talk even if I know what words I’m going to use. There also aren’t that many words such as ‘into’ or ‘from’ instead you...

Day 5
I hear ominous screaming and cheering coming from downstairs…
I’m off to investigate…
Day 4
Signed up for some chinese lessons which ought to be interesting… My dad tells me its in the blood so ‘you’ll be fine’. Problem is I think it’s stuck there.
It felt nice to hear somebody speak english. I’ve been pretty silent over the last few days apart from conversations with my sister. We met our teacher. She’s young, chinese born and bred and she...
Day 3
Didn’t get up to much today. Said bye to my dad who had to go to Beijing for the next few days as they’re making a documentary about him so he’ll be filming. Now it’s just me, my sister and my grandparents and the huge 100 foot language barrier between us.
They’re English is broken, our Chinese is non-existent save for a few basic but utterly invaluable words like ‘eat’ and ‘sleep’. But we try...
Day 1
One foot out the door and it hits me like cling film to the skin. The Heat. Its not sizzling or searing or harsh but heavy. Its like walking into a huge greenhouse full of people. As the airport’s air-con fades away behind the sliding doors, I feel as if I’ve just lost a friend whose presence I had taken for granted.
On our way from Chengdu airport to my grandparents apartment near...
